It's just interesting that it went from being taken over by faggy mall goths and Jnco pants and then completely switched directions and became the next big thing in what essentially seems like an indy rock community that is trying to stand out by associating itself with a more extreme genre than itself. I'm telling you, nowadays black metal essentially = sonic youth with distorted guitars. It is no surprise that the more prominant black metal musicians of yesteryear would want to distance themselves from the genre by moving on to ambient projects and such.
