I learned the hard way with that Douglass Adams book that came out shortly after his death:

People tend to write much worse books when they're dead.

I've never read history of middle earth, or similarian, so I don't know how good the stuff Tolkiens son pieced together is. I for one am weary, though.

ha, the context made it seem like you were WARY of reading a book pieced together by tolkien.

nah, I meant weary, as in "from my past experience with the Douglas Adams book, I am weary of a posthumous tolkien book."

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead NLI at Apr 3,2007 12:41pm
actually, on second thought, it still seems like an odd use of the word. Maybe I did mean wary.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Apr 3,2007 12:43pm
no, weary is correct.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Apr 3,2007 12:44pm
actually, depending on the context, they are both correct.

I am also weary of this. If it took this long to piece another book together how good can it be? But The Silmarilian was good in my opinion. I havn't read it for 5 years or something, but I remember it being really good except for a few chapters in the middle that for some reason couldn't hold my interest. I really should read it again though.

The Silmarillion is awesome. In some ways it's a lot better than the Ring trilogy. The mythologies are much more primal and grander in scale

Wow, took me a hot minute to even notice this thread. Christopher Tolkien's writing style is definitely different and distinct from his dads but they both show this really strong appreciation for trying to tell epic tales in the new-old mythology J.R.R. was trying to create. The History of Middle Earth and Unfinished Tales of Middle Earth and Numenor are pretty good, unfortunately some of it got a bit dry because it was just the bare bones of notes that Tolkien had written and Christopher trying his damnest to interpret it but not being really exact.
