Gritty, nihilistic, bronze-age comics with just a dash of cynical british wit. Fucking classic.

I've always wanted to get into those, just never knew a good jumping in point.

However, Judge Dredd is one of those over the top corny action movies I absolutely have to stop everything to watch whenever it's on cable.

Yes.

Really anywhere, although I'd probably just pick up a graphic novel reprinting one of the strips. They ran in "anthology" format originally (multiple 6-page strips of different titles), and later in the eighties they ran them collected by title. I used to have a HUGE collection of those, but they got stolen along with the rest of my comics (and all my other worldly possessions) around (ironically) 2000AD.

Sam Slade is hysterical, Halo Jones is dark space-tramp (LOL) adventures, Judge Dredd is just good violent nihilism. There was a lot of other titles I never got the chance to check out, but I don't think you could go too far wrong with this stuff.

If anything, the Ballad of Halo Jones is some of the best story-telling I've ever read in a comic (unsurprisingly, considering it was one of Alan Moore's earliest series).
