You always try to tell me how I feel about them =*(
Nothing they do now will ever match what they accomplished up to Brave Murder Day. Early Katatonia is so good that I still consider them one of my favorite bands, despite what they became. |
the first song was pretty awesome and then got boring. |

Zombie alt-metal! |
Right...I'm a girl, that's the only reason I like them...blah blah blah. |
I can tell that's directed at my "lol". I don't remember quoting you above, so how do you know I wasn't laughing at Conservationist's post? You know what they say about assuming... |
Sorry, I've been on rttp too long. |
You should listen to it if you like it. Someone has to support this band, I guess. As far as the whole girls liking this music because it comes across as more "feminine", I listen to Type O Negative, so what's my excuse? (I must be a homo)
My gripe with newer Katatonia is the songwriting itself. |
I get down with Discouraged Ones and some Last Fair Deal gone Down. But this shit sucks. |
i really like this album... a lot of parts are incredibly Opeth-like. you are probably not listening to the whole album and just fast forwarded the songs about 4 times to hear different parts. thats ok, but this is pretty good in my opinion... and my opinion is usually superior. so i win. |
Can't speak for Frank but I don't judge something without giving it an honest listen. I have listened to it a few times. Still not into it.
This album isn't even close to being as good as the classic Opeth albums. |
I listened to all but 2 songs. I didn't skip around. I Hate doing that. I will listen to it again. I shouldn't say it "sucks" its not bad. Its just not really my cup o tea. |
i've been listening to this all day. i really like it. it has a great atmosphere to it, i think. its not Opeth worship, but it has a lot of Opeth/Porcupine Tree like parts (the PT parts are parts with no vocals and that have somewhat weird sounding time signatures that arent actuall that weird at all)
I've had this on as background music while i play this new beat-em up MMo game that is sick... it's pretty chill. |
I do plan on listening to this at work again tomorrow, to see if there's any change in my opinion. I might just be bias, even though I'm consciously not trying to be. Brave Murder Day is literally one of my favorite albums of all time, along with that playing style. Something about his vocals and the music now, it just doesn't click with me. |
i'm about halfway through my second listen. it's more adventurous than the great cold distance and will probably grow on me more than that album did. tgcd is my least favorite katatonia album. i doubt this will come close to anything from brave murder day to viva emptiness.
so far, i like the 3rd song the most, but it kind of sonds like katatonia doing a porcupine tree-styled song. i don't think they recorded any b-sides for this, which sucks because their b-sides are usually better than anything on the album. |
Song 3 is wicked opeth/PT. Must be from hanging with Mike?
It's growing on me more and more, all their albums are like that for me. TGCD is one of my favorites. I like them all really, they're a band that does no wrong for me. Like Faith No More.
Mike, if BMD is what you love of theirs, I don't think you'll ever like their other stuff. They're just not that band anymore. But I'm a pessimist. |
Track three is great. I'm not sure about this overall yet. |
Pam, indeed BMD is my favorite, but a change in style doesn't exactly bother me either, just as long as it's for the better. The only post BMD Katatonia material I can tolerate so far has been Tonight's Decision, but only select tracks. I just think their songwriting has become formulaic and bland, but that's just IMO.
Jonas and Blakkheim are both capable musicians, so I always end up giving the new Katatonia albums a chance, based off that fact. |
my problem with the new album so far is the way a lot of the songs just seem to end without any resolution. with most songs you hear, you can kind of tell when the ending is coming, but that doesn't happen very often on this album. |
1st song is GREAT then snoozefest begins! |
is this out in stores yet? if so i'm going to newbury comics on my lunch break |
no, i think it's out in stores late next month |
November 10th (North America). |
i think i'll go anyways and just try to find Brave Murder Day. |
can't go wrong with that record |
ATTN: Dreadkill
...Yes |
Anyone ever read the lyrics to Last Fair Deal and then not like it anymore? |
It only took hearing the music of LFDGD for me to not really like it. However, I've been repeatedly listening to Discouraged Ones lately. While not "hating" it, I used to think of D.C. as containing half-assed BMD riffs with Jonas sounding like a poor man's Robert Smith.
Maybe I can enjoy it now for the fact they'll never be that band again, or maybe it's a credit to my current state of mind? Either way, it took years of listening, but I'm really digging the hell out of this album now. |
discouraged ones is one of my favorite albums of all time. glad you're liking it now. |
