Carcass, Convulse. Two bands I haven't seen before that I would be into. As always, the first announcement never does much for me and it's always later on that I start getting excited.

Aosoth? Nice.
Edit: last I checked they didn't have a drummer. Hopefully they have a live one.
Venom, Integrity, Carcass, and Midnight. So many fucks are given.
I would add Antaeus and Manilla Road, and subtract Midnight. Pretty good band but don't really care that much. I love Integrity but I could care less about seeing them at MDF. Where's the DEATH in MDF these days? Shit like Last Days of Humanity or Summoning (random, whatever) or something, not all these crust / HC bands would be way better.

Couldn't agree more. They need to add more death metal bands I give a shit about. Demigod and Disma during the day were highlights for me this year. I hope Integrity doesnt attract a bunch of tough guy hardcore douchebags to the fest.
Integrity will probably cause a bunch of folks to buy one day passes for whatever day they play. There was clearly a crowd just there for Converge on Sunday in 2010 that wasn't there for the other days.

The highlights for me were probably Godflesh and Winter. Wish I had seen Morbid Saint and Macabre. Noothgrush were good as well. Im definitely psyched about Carcass playing.
I'll just put it out there, while I'm not a big crust fan, I do support this fest having some hardcore bands, some grind, some powerviolence, etc. I understand why people think this should be a metal fest but seeing as my background is more in the aforementioned genres, getting to see bands like Capitalist Casualties enhances my weekend greatly.
MDF is more than just Death Metal. I dont think they are losing sight of it, but they aren't beholden to it. Luckily 'Death' is a term that doesn't look bad when other metal genres are attached. I like Black Grind Death Thrash Heavy and Doom, so it works out for me.
That being said, I'm sure they will add more Death Metal bands.
As far as the tough guy hardcore goes, I hope they are careful with that. I like crust, grind and powerviolence but I hope they see it as icing on the cake or something like that. Remember when the Hardcore and Metal Fest was hardcore and metal. Now it is all mallcore with a few pure bands (eg. traditional death or thrash or black) that can't hide the mallcore taste.
I didnt mean specifically death metal thats why I said LDOH and Summoning, I just meant that changing the basis for what you are to expand your fan base is the first step to Some Kind of Monster.
ahahahahaha i forgot about that, the day after was an asian freemason convention.

To be fair, the NEMAHF has about as much real hardcore as it has real metal bands. Maybe three-four real metal bands, three-four real hardcore bands.
Hardcore IS NOT the same as that modern hardcore bullshit, or is it the same as metalcore, deathcore, emocore, etc.
Personally, I prefer lineups of the festival from 2009 onwards much more than their lineups from before then because I am NOT really a big fan of death/black metal as a whole. But that's just me. But with MDF we get hardcore, sludge, doom, thrash, etc. which is all insanely awesome in my opinion.
Spencer troll is obviously not the real Duck Duck Gooser.

Nah, he is. Message him on facebook if you want to confirm :P
I actually used to post on this forum every now and then, but I always used random account names. But... I just... don't give a fuck about using my name now, since most of you know me from facebook and/or shows anyway.
They need to add more death metal bands I give a shit about.
They need to kill more bands at this fest, earn the name.
Every year it's 3 bands I'd love to see and 10,997 bands that make me stay home.

Ive seen all the big name bands that I want to see so far. So probably not going unless the rest of the lineup turns out to be amazing. Although I think i might go JUST to see Manilla Road and thats it. Pretty burned out on MDF after this past year.

An updated list of confirmed bands can be found below. We have quite a bit in the works with some of the headliners for next year's fest, so with a little luck, we'll be able to announce them soon, along with plenty of other bands. As mentioned previously, we expect to reveal information regarding the new venue sometime in August.
I've been listening to a lot of Manilla Road the last two days cause Ross keeps spreading the word of his love for them. I knew of them but never really listened to them. Quickly becoming a big fan.

I've avoided them since their name conjures images of stuffing tax returns into manilla envelopes. What style of metals do they play?

They're like a proggy traditional metal band. I like Crystal Logic alot.

One of my favorite bands ever. Will be great live. The newer albums were even good.
also Kevin we're covering 'the riddle master' on next release.

I second Cirith Ungol.
Manilla Road is pretty amazing - I wanted to go see them in Ohio with Helstar, Exxplorer and a bunch of other bands but ended up not going. So i'm pretty happy that I have another chance to see them, even if their set will probably be no where nearly as long.
that one is the one I like best but I haven't even heard half of their albums.
I'm bit by bit familiarizing myself with their entire catalog, as High Roller Records reissues all their material. The consistency is amazing. I have no idea why the added their current vocalist, but the new stuff is great too.
the first MR records are great but I'm most partial to Crystal Logic, Open the Gates, and The Deluge. Particularly 'crystal' and 'deluge.' Out of the Abyss was a pretty good record, not quite on par though, but it did have a song based on one of my favorite Clive Barker stories 'midnight meat train.'
Be sure to check out 'atlantis rising' and 'spiral castle' as well. They may be post-2000 but they're definitely good albums.
Vinterland were one hit wonders then disappeared. They're all pushing 40 now, who knows what they sound like. I'd rather see them at a club then an outdoor heat fest with Ghost shirts.
PATIENTLT AWAITING DAWN
Vinterland had some killer stuff, and it's not hipster in the slightest. I'm just more excited about Venom, Carcass, Pagan Altar, and Manilla Road at a big fest like this.
Vinterland is a great band.
I'm not shitting in my pants over any black metal like I used to. It was a huge part of my life for a while but my tatses have shifted. The only reason why there's a "bm" at the end of this name is because in 2004 The_Reverend sent an email to everyone on this board with everyones passwords. How that flew unnoticed goes beyond me.
When would you get to see Vinterland again? Who has even seen them anyways?
Carcass hasn't done shit since the 90s either..
carcass was at the palladium 4 years ago.
yeah no shit dumbass, I almost went to that show. I was referring to written material because ross stated that Vinterland hasn't 'done' anything since 96..neither has carcass but play some live shows which is pretty much what i assume vinterland is going to do.

What's so lulzy about adding one of the most legendary thrash bands of all time? I admit they might be a little too mainstream for this fest but the quality of music is there.

Exodus is a total and utter joke now. Their music is unacceptable, their live show is awful(seen them twice) and they ignore 99% of their pre-Tempo of the Damned material.
Fuck Exodus. I love their old shit, of course, but fuck them now.
I call bullshit. That band had a renaissance. They have Lee Altus on guitar and Gary holt's writing has been stellar. I listen to the new stuff all the time
Wouldn't be shocked if they only played old stuff. I assume they know the crowd they'll be playing for and I don't think the guys who run MDF would let them go up their and do a bullshit set. I heard from reliable sources that it was in Morbid Angels contract that they could only play one new song at this years fest.
Morbid Angel played two songs from the new album though, didn't they? Haha
And I know, Exodus have recently played BBB in entirety at European festivals but it's their modernized sound. Let There Be Blood is just... not particularly good and Dukes voice and stage presence is awful.
I like the newer exodus and all, but the original drummer makes the old songs sound not right. And rob dukes sucked singing the old stuff until they did the bonded by blood redo. Now he's got much better range.
I love Exodus and all, but even I don't know what that Bonded By Blood remake was all about. If it HAD to exist, it should have been a second/bonus disc to a regular release. A just for fun thing. Like what Venom did with Cast In Stone.
Oh yeah, I listen to Venom material after Cronos came back. Despite that fact my Exodus opinions are valid. Don't use it against me.
Bolt thrower, Sleep, Abigail,Cruciamentum,Anhedonist, and Speedwolf. I would pay just to see that show. I'm super psyched now. It feels like May 2013 is gonna take forever to get here.
BOLT THROWER HOLY SHIT YES. Going into their set(s) in 09 I was fan. Since then I have become a huge fan. Still the best thing I've seen at MDF in my 5 years of going.
Since they are already booking flights from Japan they should throw Metalucifer on that plane.
Booking my hotel on October 2nd and buying my tickets on October 15th. I was hoping I wouldn't want to go again since fests tend to be more frustrating than anything to me now, but fucking christ this lineup is too good to ignore.
We're a day early with this announcement, but we can finally let you know where MDF XI will be taking place.
In a nutshell, we will be returning to the property formerly known as Sonar, and will be at least doubling the amount of outside space that we've been used to utilizing. We realize that it's a bit of a mind fuck to wait around for a few months just to hear that the fest is returning to the same place, but truth be told, the other places we looked at were either not able to give us a definite answer anytime soon, and/or had too many inconveniences that we did not want to put the fans through. During the venue search, it was brought to our attention that the new owners of the property were willing to collaborate with us, so we decided to go through with returning to a familiar place that is close to the hotels and conveniences of downtown Baltimore.
The additional space outside will allow us to comfortably accommodate the crowd, and will a
llow more room for the MDF vendor village, food vendors/food trucks, places to sit, and other new additions like misting tents to escape the possibility of it being hotter than it should be that weekend. There will be two outside stages plus the stage inside. Due to the new configuration outside, the placement of the outside stages will likely be different.
As for the building itself, there are some renovations currently taking place, but the rooms will be used exactly how they have been in the past, and it will be air conditioned throughout.
We would also like to announce the addition of a second inside stage at Baltimore Soundstage, which is a 1/2 mile walk away from the former Sonar (at 124 Market Place), and will be used from Friday-Sunday. This will be a smaller show without a barricade that will feature mostly hardcore and punk bands, and it will be scheduled in a way that should not conflict with anything going on at the former Sonar compound. All of the bands for this stage will be included in next week's announcement on October 9th.
I love punk rock and HC but I really dont think they need a whole stage of it at maryland DEATH fest. If a DM band played a punk rock show theyd get laughed off stage. U METAL KHEDS DONT EVEN KNOW, BACK IN THA DAY IT WUZ THA PUNK ROCKAZ VS THE METAL KHEDS

I always wonder how much of that "punk vs. metal" thing that supposedly happened in the 80s was a complete fabrication. It seems like punk kids had a bug up their ass and the metal dudes were down with whatever.
The whole "metal vs punk" thing (assuming that was really a thing, and not something that was just fabricated for Heavy Metal Parking Lot) was kind of hypocritical if you think about it. Metallica had some really obvious punk influences in their early demos and on Kill Em All. So did Venom, Bathory, Exciter, Di'Anno era Maiden, and countless other speed/heavy/thrash bands.
I've definitely heard multiple accounts both directly and indirectly that punks in the 80s were either "not supposed to like punk" or that just a lot of people hated it. That's the thing I'm saying too though, without hardcore punk you wouldn't even have thrash or any of the faster genres of metal at all. Perhaps punk kids were just mad that metalheads only got something out of the music and not the message. OH WELL

Heard a rumor that Angel Witch might get added to this. I don't know if it's true or not. But if so, I would consider that to be one of the greatest days of my life.
Ive always believed metal vs punk was a result of nightly brawls/riots when black sabbath toured with the ramones. Neither band has really addressed it...wasn't the tour canceled a few dates in?

that's a chicken and egg argument, it's divergent evolution, complete incestual history. neither genre has ever had a consistent message. "metal vs. punk" smells like 80's hijinks to SELL RECORDS because all of it was big money by then.
The 80's Punk vs. Metal thing was more about scenes and cliques then about music.

No King Diamond is super gay. I wish they could have gotten an actual metal band to take Down and the Melvins slots. I fear this fest is gonna turn really mainstream and gay over the next few years.
The only bands on the Soundstage I'd be real interested in seeing are Hellshock and Sete Star Sept, the rest I've ever seen before or don't care about or both. As for the in Sonar announcement, whole bunch of no care.
"Just a few things that we'd like to follow up on:
As mentioned previously, accidentally left off of the list posted earlier is Massgrav (Sweden), who will be playing at Soundstage.
We'd also like to make it clear that the Ascension playing is the black metal band, the Necropsy playing is the local band from Baltimore and NOT the Finnish band, and the Infest playing is NOT from Poland. As always, if there is no country of origin listed next to the band, you can assume they are from the US.
Next Monday, multi-day passes and Thursday only tickets will be available to purchase at 12 pm (ET). There will be multi-day pass options that cover only bands playing at the former Sonar, and there will also be an option that covers all bands on all days at both venues. As mentioned previously, Soundstage will only be in use from Friday-Sunday.
We will announce who is playing the Thursday show on the 15th when tickets go on sale. We will have a list of bands for the other days complete before the end of October, which is when single day tickets for those days will go on sale."
Melvins don't belong here at all. I've seen them multiple times and like em and all, but it's annoying considering how many times they have mocked metal and metal fans over the years.

Soundstage for me, Hellshock, Iron Lung, Sete Star Sept, and Vitamin X should all be rad. Even though I'm not into Infest reuniting, I would have no choice but to check them out. D.O.C. would probably be fun too as well as some other bands I don't know.
They should swap Rotten Sound for Gride at those stages though.
I'm glad they made it a no barrier stage. Iron Lung is always great live, but as far as wanting to avoid that stage, I can't blame anyone too much. There are some horrible fucking bands playing it.
"Due to the limited amount of tickets available for Soundstage (1,000/day between all ticket options), and the fact that we've had an enormous amount of tickets orders come in today, the 4-day pass that covers all bands at both venues will likely be sold out sometime this evening. We knew they'd sell fast, but we didn't expect them to last only 1 day. In fairness to those that want to see only specific bands at Soundstage, several hundred single day tickets for each day there will go on sale before the end of the month for $20/day.
Thursday only tickets and the 4-day pass for the former Sonar should last at least a week or two, but we don't know for sure. We'll flick on the warning siren when the time comes."
I got the Four day pass. I might get the additional soundstage one, but I would like to know the daily lineups first. I love hellshock, but I'm not going to skip Carcass to see them....
post by aaronthed at Oct 16,2012 10:08am
i'm a sucker and bought the 4 day and the 3 day soundstage and I already regret it
i know they're gonna pull some bullshit like putting infest on at the same time as manilla road or something
Four day passes are now sold out, but you can get a 3day pass and an individual ticket for Thursday if you jump on it now. Any Bolt Thrower fans have to shit or get off the pot.
There's still going to be three day sonar passes, and one day sonar passes for Friday-Sunday, as well as one day passes to each day for the Soundstage.
If someone picked up a three day soundstage pass, and then picked up individual day passes for the Soundstage, it'd be like a four day all access pass - but minus Thursday. haha
Don't know how much this would cost though.
If Manilla Road, Sleep and Carcass all end up on the same day somehow, I may go down just for that one.
Demondave, fthe former voice of Sonic Fury on RIU radio! Brian Blood-Axe..... Sonic Fury.
The Thursday show for MDF XI is sold out. Due to some of the nasty e-mails and messages we've been reading, it is likely that you've already caught wind of this news. Do keep this in mind: Bolt Thrower prefers to play inside shows, which is the reason they were given the Thursday headlining role. It was either book them for Thursday or not book them at all. Sending us e-mails telling us to fuck off and how stupid it is to have them on Thursday isn't going to get you anywhere. A more appropriate approach would be to keep your eyes glued to our message board in the coming months, as inevitably, people must cancel their plans to attend and sell their tickets to others. Furthermore, Bolt Thrower is playing at least one other show while in the US, so MDF isn't your only option to see them.
Regarding Soundstage ticket availability - If you did not get a multi-day pass that covers Soundstage access, we will be releasing single day tickets for each day on October 31st, which is when a list of bands for each day of the festival will be posted. Consider this a fair warning if you still want access to the bands at Soundstage. Will these sell out? Yes. Will they sell out in a matter of days? We have no idea. Just go to the website on October 31st and get single day tickets for Soundstage if you want to be on the safe side.
Some of the hotels we've been in touch with aren't giving much of shit for a discount, so we're still working on it. When we have some news in this department, we'll post it.
lol @ butt hurt noobs emailing these guys about BT playing thursday. Someone find those guys a gf or a hobby.
post by AndrewBastard NLI at Oct 19,2012 2:25pm
Due to the overwhelming demand for Thursday tickets, specifically to see Bolt Thrower, we have contacted the band who are now looking into the possibility of playing a second set at MDF between Friday-Sunday.
If a second set happens, we'll let you know very soon, but do keep in mind that it would also be an inside show. The band prefers to play inside, which is why we scheduled them to headline Thursday to begin with.
Nobody, including ourselves or Bolt Thrower, expected tickets for Thursday to sell out (in only 3 days), so we are doing what we can for those of you who missed out on a ticket, and those that have 4 day passes will have an opportunity to see them twice.
...
lol @ anyones what people think of Bolt Thrower. Theyve been one of the best DM ever since before you were born. That being said, 2 sets in one fest is stupid, for ANY band.
As much as I have no problem seeing Bolt Thrower twice I'm afraid that it's gonna push a band I want to see into an even later set time. The days are long enough as it is.

kromosom from aussie is really good noisey punk ala all those old nasty jap bands like confuse and kuro. i have their demo from 2010 real good shit i hope they do a tour around mdf!!!!! crazy that infest is getting back together to play. though at the risk of sounding too cool and punk. id rather see them in a smaller club than a big stage. thats just my two cents. for anybody going and into no bull shit real hardcore punk check out kromosom!!!!!!!!
This is the first year I'll be around on Memorial Day for MDF, so I just bought 4 tickets to head down with some band mates. Any recommendations for hotels?
Based on KEVORDs last post, if I even go it looks like it will be just be for sunday. There are a few good bands here and there throughout the other days but mostly just garbage. Also, how useless are the soundstage line-ups? Horrible. Jeez.
Well... I was hoping that Carcass, Sleep and Manilla Road would somehow all end up on the same day. Looks like that was a bust.
Yea really. Not trying to be a downer or everything but if you took all the bands worth paying all that money to go to MD to see and put them together, it would barely even make one full day, and then on top of it, theyre all split between four days, so juust to see like the five or six worthwhile bands I would have to pay for four days worth. Fuck that, I will use the money on a new guitar or a plane ticket to europe instead.
I realize that some of these bands I may never see, but spending probably around or over 600 bucks between the ticket, gas, hotel, food and merch just... isn't worth it.
Let's face the facts. With all due respect to the good bands that are playing, this fest is too spread out with too many bands and a mediocre venue. It should also be 21+. They are aiming too high and want to put on the best fest in America (which they do), but it is overkill.
They have some of the best lineups and bands come over, but 4 days?
The outdoor venue is actually a pretty cool set up. 4 days seems like a lot but it flys by. I'm old and get tired quickly and I made it all four days. I assume they have to spread it out to pay for all of the bands and keep the ticket prices some what reasonable.
I'm pleased that all the bands I want to see are evenly spread out over 4 days so I can relax. I just hope none of the bands I want to see play at noon or some shit on any of the days.
Seriously! I know I'm infamous for liking everything but this fest is going to be awesome! Every year MDF has been the best weekend ever, I have no doubt this will be too!
Single day and the single soundstage tickets are on sale now. I decided that I want soundstage access. It is secondary to the Sonar area, but there are some bands that are worth it. At the very least, I don't want to go all that way and not be able to see a band if I feel like it.
Please take note that Sleep has been moved to the Sunday show at MDF XI and will not be playing on Saturday. The band has issued a statement on the matter below.
" Sleep is honored to perform at Maryland Deathfest 2013.
Al Cisneros (Om, Sleep), Matt Pike (High On Fire, Sleep) and Jason Roeder (Neurosis, Sleep) have been carefully balancing busy touring schedules to push forward
with Sleep as a full, reunited band.
Please be advised: to facilitate the touring opportunities offered to both Om and Neurosis in May 2013, Sleep has rescheduled their appearance at MDF 2013 from Saturday May 25th to Sunday May 26th. Sleep offers humble apologies to anyone that this may inconvenience. (insert verbiage here pertaining to contingencies for those with Saturday-only tickets) We look forward to MDF and beyond.
Praise thee who accept The Iommic in thine heart
- Sleep"
REGARDING THE POSSIBILITY OF EXPANDING CAPACITY FOR THE THURSDAY SHOW AT THE FORMER SONAR:
After some recent meetings about the possibility of expanding the capacity on Thursday, we're feeling very optimistic that we will be able to release more tickets sometime in December. It is not guaranteed, but things are looking positive. If we are able to release more tickets for Thursday, we will give advance notice here, so stay tuned.
In the next couple of months, we'll be able to elaborate a bit more on how the additional space we have access to around the former Sonar will be used. We'll also post a labeled map to help newcomers to MDF get acquainted with the area of the festival, including the easiest, most direct route between the former Sonar and Baltimore Soundstage. The walk between the two venues is an easy, quick 1/2 mile walk that takes less than 10 minutes.
The last of the Friday and Sunday tickets for Baltimore Soundstage are still available on the MDF website. The Saturday show at Soundstage is sold out.
A flyer is in the works and will be available for you to look at sometime soon.
We're now able to announce a full list of merch and food vendors that will be on site at MDF XI.

The Loaded Potato
Also, the Hollywood Diner at the corner of Saratoga St. and Holliday St will be OPEN and part of fest grounds.
A schedule for each day will be posted sometime in April. Also, we will post a detailed map of the fest grounds that will make it easier to understand the changes this year, including info about the new, bigger parking lot that is located just 1-2 blocks from the entrance.
The weather is shaping up to be totally reasonable this year. Thursday forecast is in the 80s and the rest of the weekend is 70s. Unfuckingreal. An MDF where you aren't about to pass out from heat exhaustion and dehydration is one I've never experienced.
