Norwegian legends Darkthrone have completed work on their latest album 'The Underground Resistance', which is set for release on Peaceville Records on February 25th.
‘The Underground Resistance’ is Darkthrone’s latest venture through the metal cosmos, & first new album since the 2010 opus ‘Circle the Wagons’. A continuation of the free-spirited metallic lands the duo of Fenriz & Nocturno Culto have been roaming for a long time, ‘The Underground Resistance’ contains Darkthrone’s trademark masterful riffing in a broad range of styles, effortlessly bounding through the annals of classic metal, taking in thrash, speed & black metal, & not forgetting a dose of Punk. All in all a ferocious & dynamic set of tracks drenched in Fenriz’s & Nocturno’s rich & diverse tastes in all things metal, primarily those rooted firmly in the spirit of the 80’s. 6 tracks long, & every one an epic in itself, this is undoubtedly Darkthrone’s strongest outing of late.
‘The Underground Resistance’ was written & recorded spring 2010 to summer 2012 at Necrohell 2 studios by the band themselves. The album was mastered by Jack Control at Enormous Door, Texas USA. Cover artwork also comes courtesy of the iconic & celebrated artist Jim Fitzpatrick.
“3 songs each, Ted's are flown from the universe of metal with his strongest voice ever so far. Songs of mine are torn from the wombs of the riders of rohan of metal; safely cradled in 1985 style” – Fenriz, December 2012
Darkthrone began life in the late 80’s as a thrash/death metal act & progressed through technical death/doom metal experimentation to become legends of the black metal world & one of the original leading bands of the Norwegian scene, as well as inspiring a whole generation of metal bands.

Interested in this, will give it a shot. Newer DT usually doesn't tickle my fancy but I'm willing to see how this is. |

DARK THRONES AND PURPLE SHORTS |
can't wait for this. Darkthrone can do no wrong. |
i dont mind newer Darkthrone but I dont like it enough to give a shit about new albums from them. |
this is me giving a few shits |
"new" Darkthrone usually has two-three fairly awesome songs and the rest is passable. |

That's generally my take as well. I dig a song or two, then get bored. Whereas with the older stuff, I can listen to the whole album. |

yea I mean every now and then its good, like the guitar part at the end of the song 'dark thrones and black flags' but the rest of the song is garbage. |
new stuff kills. it's not a slam dunk like older material yet the writing is really fucking good. Tracks like Wisdom of the Dead, I hated for awhile but have come around and think it's one of their best songs. No other band has the balls to change up like they have and the bottom line is they haven't fallen on their face, yet. |
Gonna hit up the record store tonight and get my copy. Dont expect to be totally blown away, but it's Darkthrone. |
This is a real headbanger of an album. Riffs galore. |
Nice. I have Circle another chance and really like some of the songs now. Interested in checking this out at your place sometime, bsv. Fuck using youtube. |
I haven't listened to anything online from the new album, completely in the dark on what it sounds like other than what I have read on this thread. Beers will be had, smoke shall be puffed. |
Oh shit! the first track Dead Early comes out kicking ass, wanted to hate on Valkyrie but the second half of the song kicks in and makes it fucking work. Just finished listening to it, and read the review from deathmetal, I agree it has early metal sounds on this album, but if you fucking love early metal why the fuck wouldn't you like this? I would say this is an album that I can listen to all the way through without having to change it to something else, one of their better more recent releases. |
one of their better more recent releases. |
This may be true, but it's not really a positive distinction. Everything since Total Death has been pretty bleak from this band. |

Very true, but have you listened to this album as a whole yet? I would be one of the first ones accusing them of halfassing an album like they have been doing with the last few albums, it's a solid album. Their earlier albums will always reign supreme, but this album is worth getting, having some drinks, having a goodtime whilst listening to them. |

Ravishing Grimness never gets any love. |
Nothing on this album is unique; if you’ve listened to 70s and 80s metal to any extent, you will know these riffs. Devoid of originality, this album could have been recorded by any nameless metal band.

I gotta say it's a poor review, you criticize them for not being young and poor (for Norwegians) and then use the junk food analogy again. And oh look, a metal album is devoid of originality, STAY AWAY. |

truth |
Devoid of originality, sure. I don't want Darkthrone to be a cutting edge prog band that has to reinvent the wheel on every album. Give me some fucking RIFFS. |
Good music for a quick wank. |
do you people love this retro crap so much? doesnt anyone want to hear something theyve never heard before? thats what was so great about metal in back in the day, everything was a first, this is just crap. |
first of all, I think I am far older than you as far as listening to metal/hard rock to know what's fucking what. Bands mature, music evolves, what is good for you as an artist today changes and evolves into what is good for you as an artist 10 to 20 years from now. You want to make the music that is true to you, and reflective of what you have been exposed to. |
this album fucking rules! |

Good point. A brief addition:
Things can also evolve into bullshit. Some call this devolution. |

I really, realy doubt that. |

Meh, you could be right, who is the oldest dude on here then? |
doesnt anyone want to hear something theyve never heard before? |
absolutely, but not when i put on darkthrone. and i'm not out with torch and pitchfork demanding something i haven't heard before, there's plently of that around. goddamn, it's not the deevolution of society, it's just another darkthrone record. |
Are there any actual black metal moments on this album? I stopped by jewbury comics the other day and on the sticker it noted the various styles of metal contained within the record and the last one they included was black metal.
What say any of you? |
Braintree @ South Shore Plaza. |
Shoes, youre a braintree. |
But yeah, phil did a good job with the metal section at the braintree newbury comics. |
Yeah man, Phil's a solid dude. |
Not particularly bad, not particularly good. Don't know why I'd notice, except that I don't mind sending money to Fenriz and Nocturno Culto so they can retire. Musicians have no fucking pensions. |
